Planning your Gulmarg ski trip

Written by our team, who between us have arranged travel for guests from over 30 countries and rescued more than a few trips derailed by missed flights, dead SIM cards and one memorable lost ski bag that toured North India for a week before finding its owner.

Gulmarg rewards planning more than most ski destinations. It's not hard to get to, but it's different: the last stretch of road can need a 4x4, your home SIM card probably won't work, and the weather sets the schedule, not you. Plan around those realities and the trip runs smoothly. Ignore them and you spend your holiday problem-solving.

Here's everything, in the order you'll need it.

Getting to Gulmarg

Fly to Srinagar (SXR). Direct flights run daily from Delhi and Mumbai, with more connections through the winter. Book the earliest arrival you can: winter fog delays afternoon flights more often, and arriving with daylight in hand makes everything easier.

Srinagar to Gulmarg is about 50 km, 1.5 to 2 hours. The road runs through Tangmarg, the market town at the base of the hill, then climbs about 12 km of switchbacks to Gulmarg. In normal conditions any taxi does the whole run. After heavy snowfall, regular cars stop at Tangmarg and you switch to a 4x4 or chained vehicle for the climb; local drivers handle this hand-off routinely, and it costs a few hundred rupees extra.

Pre-book your transfer. Airport taxis are available, but a fixed price arranged in advance beats negotiating with a trolley full of ski bags. We include pickups for our guests, as do most hotels if you ask.

Overland options exist (Jammu rail-head plus a long mountain drive) but with winter conditions on that highway, flying into Srinagar is the sane choice for a ski trip.

Permits and formalities: foreign visitors need a valid Indian visa; no separate permit is required for Gulmarg itself. Carry passport copies, as hotels register all guests.

Where to stay

Gulmarg's lodging splits into rough tiers. Names below are examples we're happy to point guests toward, not paid placements.

Luxury: The Khyber Himalayan Resort is the flagship, a genuine five-star with a spa and the best breakfast in town. Expect prices to match. Book months ahead for January and February.

Upper mid-range: Hotels like Highlands Park (old-world, wood-panelled, walking distance to the gondola) and several newer properties offer heated rooms, decent restaurants, and reliable hot water. This tier suits most visiting skiers.

Budget and guesthouses: Simple rooms in Gulmarg itself, plus cheaper options down in Tangmarg. Staying in Tangmarg saves real money but adds a daily commute up the hill and cuts you off from evening life around the resort. Fine for tight budgets, tiresome by day five.

Three booking rules from watching guests get this wrong:

Confirm the room is actually heated, and how (central heating vs a bukhari stove vs a plug-in radiator). "Heating available" can mean many things in Kashmir.
January and February weekends sell out. Book lodging before flights if your dates are fixed.
Location beats luxury for skiers. A modest hotel five minutes from the gondola beats a fancy one twenty-five minutes away, every single morning of your trip.

Lift passes and daily logistics

Gondola tickets are sold per phase. You can buy single rides or day passes, and Phase 2 costs more than Phase 1. Prices are revised most seasons, so confirm current rates when you book; as a planning figure, a full day on both phases has recently cost about what a half-day pass costs in the Alps, often less.

Practical notes that save headaches:

Buy tickets online where the current system allows, or get to the ticket window early. Peak-season queues start before opening.
Phase 2 opening is decided daily based on wind and avalanche work. Have a Phase 1 or tree-skiing plan B ready. Our guides build every day this way.

Cash, connectivity and power, the three eternal Gulmarg questions:

Cash: bring what you'll need from Srinagar. ATMs exist in Gulmarg and Tangmarg but queues and outages are common in peak weeks. Hotels and bigger operators take cards and UPI; small shops and taxis often don't.
SIM cards: prepaid SIMs from the rest of India generally don't work in Jammu and Kashmir. Options: an Indian postpaid SIM, or a local prepaid SIM arranged after arrival (takes documentation and a little time). Plan for patchy data regardless and download offline maps before you come.
Power: cuts happen, especially during storms. Hotels have backup for essentials. Bring a power bank.

What a Gulmarg trip costs

Real numbers move with the season and exchange rate, so here are honest 2025-26 orders of magnitude per person for a 7-day trip, excluding flights:

Budget: guesthouse or Tangmarg lodging, rental gear, group lessons or limited guiding, simple meals. Roughly the cost of a mid-range weekend in a European resort, stretched across a full week.
Mid-range: comfortable heated hotel near the lifts, quality rentals, several private guided days, good restaurant meals. Usually still less than a week's lift passes plus lodging alone in the Alps or Rockies.
Top end: the Khyber, private guiding daily, the works. Costs real money and still undercuts equivalent luxury ski weeks elsewhere by a wide margin.

The pattern is consistent: the flight is often your single biggest line item, and everything on the ground is where Gulmarg's value shows.

Sample itineraries

First-timer week (7 days): Day 1, arrive Srinagar, transfer up, gear fitting, early night. Days 2-4, morning lessons on the meadow, afternoons exploring or resting. Days 5-6, Phase 1 skiing, the long run to the village, maybe a first gentle tree run with an instructor. Day 7, buffer for weather or a Srinagar stop (a shikara ride on Dal Lake is the classic) before the flight.

Powder hunter week (7-8 days): Day 1, arrive and acclimatise. Day 2, guided warm-up on Phase 1 and lower Phase 2, legs and lungs adjusting. Days 3-6, full guided days chasing the best snow: bowls, Mary's Shoulder, tree runs to Drang as conditions allow. Day 7, flexible: a summit hike day, a touring day, or the storm-day tree plan. Day 8, buffer and departure. The buffer day is not optional here; weather will spend it for you more trips than not.

Two-week mixed trip: week one as the powder week above, week two adds ski touring, a Srinagar houseboat night, and rest days. This is the trip people write to us about years later.

Common mistakes

We see the same handful every winter:

Booking 3-4 ski days. Weather eats one or two, and you fly home having seen the mountain through a gondola window. Come for 6+ ski days minimum.
No buffer before the flight home. Heavy snow can slow the road to Srinagar. Build half a day of slack.
Assuming your SIM will work. Covered above; still catches half our first-time guests.
Underestimating altitude. Sleeping at 2,650 m and skiing to 4,000 m deserves respect. Hydrate, go easy the first two days, skip the heavy first-night celebration.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do I need in Gulmarg?

Six or seven ski days is the sweet spot for a first trip. It gives weather room to interfere and still leaves you plenty of mountain time.

Can I do Gulmarg on a budget?

Yes, easily by international ski standards. Guesthouse lodging, rental gear and group lessons make it one of the cheapest places on earth to become a skier.

Is Srinagar worth a stopover?

A night on a Dal Lake houseboat, the old city, and Kashmiri wazwan food make a fine bookend to a ski week. Many guests do their last night there before an early flight.

When should I book?

Lodging and guides for January-February: two to four months out, more for the Khyber and for group trips. Flights: whenever fares look sane; the Delhi-Srinagar route has plenty of frequency.

Do foreigners need any special permit for Gulmarg?

No permit beyond a normal Indian visa. Carry your passport; hotels and occasional checkpoints will ask.
