The short version: you can rent everything you need in Gulmarg, the good shops now carry proper powder gear, and prices are low. But quality ranges from excellent to scrap metal depending on where you rent, and a few items are worth bringing from home no matter what. This page sorts all of it.

Skis and boards. Every rental tier exists here. At the bottom, cheap shops near the taxi stand rent battered old skis that are fine for two days of snowplough on the meadow and nothing more. At the top, established shops (including our own rental fleet) carry recent-model all-mountain and powder skis from real brands, 100 mm+ underfoot, properly tuned. If you're heading anywhere near Phase 2, insist on modern fat skis; skiing Gulmarg powder on 15-year-old carving skis is a hazing ritual nobody needs.

Snowboard selection is decent and improving each season: proper all-mountain and freeride shapes are available at the better shops, though size runs are thinner than for skis (very big feet and very small riders should book ahead).
Boots. The weakest link in most rental fleets anywhere, and Gulmarg is no exception. Better shops stock a reasonable size range in serviceable condition. Try boots on with your actual ski socks, walk around for ten minutes, and reject anything with pressure points. A mediocre ski with a good boot beats the reverse every time.
Outerwear and accessories. Jackets, pants, gloves, goggles and helmets can all be rented. This matters for domestic travellers who don't own winter kit and don't want to buy it for one trip. Rental outerwear keeps you warm and dry enough for lessons and Phase 1 skiing. For full days in storms up high, owned or borrowed technical shells work better.

Touring gear. Skins, touring bindings and splitboards exist in small numbers through guide outfits. Serious tourers should bring their own setup; the local pool is limited and sized for guided groups.
What rental costs
Ballpark figures, confirm current rates when you book:
- Basic beginner ski or board package (skis/board, boots, poles): a few hundred rupees per day from budget shops.
- Quality powder ski or freeride board package: roughly ₹1,000 to ₹2,500 per day depending on the model and shop.
- Full outerwear kit: a few hundred rupees per day.
- Avalanche kit (beacon, shovel, probe): typically ₹500 to ₹1,000 per day standalone, included with guided bookings.
Multi-day discounts are standard. A week of top-tier powder gear here costs about what two days costs in Chamonix.
One habit worth adopting: photograph the gear when you take it and when you return it. Reputable shops don't invent damage charges, but the photo takes ten seconds and settles any question.
The Gulmarg packing list
Refined over many winters of watching what guests actually use and actually forget.
On-mountain:
- Thermal base layers, two sets
- Mid layer fleece or light down
- Waterproof insulated jacket and pants (or shell plus warm mid layer)
- Ski socks, three pairs minimum
- Gloves or mitts, plus spares; liner gloves for gondola rides
- Neck gaiter or balaclava (January wind at 4,000 m finds every gap)

Caring for gear in Kashmir conditions
A few habits that keep equipment working here:
Dry everything nightly. Boots pulled open near (not on) the heat source, liners out if they're soaked, gloves hung. Storm cycles mean wet kit, and starting a minus-fifteen morning in damp boots is grim.
Keep electronics warm. Phone and beacon batteries drain fast in the cold; inner pockets, not backpacks.
Check edges and bases mid-trip if you're skiing hard. The better shops offer quick tunes; wind-scoured snow between storms dulls edges faster than groomed pistes do.
